The primary advantage of plates over brackets is that it is a simple mechanical arrangement. The main disadvantage is that the plate does not insulate the element from the boom, which means that the element dimensions that you bring from your antenna design program (YO, AO, EZNEC and others) will be incorrect unless you make some length adjustment for the width of the plate and boom.
